New 8-Bit Embedded Flash Microcontroller From Toshiba Controls Large Household Appliances
Microcontroller's Combination of Built-In Memory and Peripherals Ideal for White Goods
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced the introduction of a new 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) with built-in Flash memory and high-speed operation of 16 megahertz (MHz). Based on SuperFlash(R) Technology licensed from Silicon Storage Technology, Inc. (see news release dated September 29, 2003) and designated TMP86FS49, the new MCU was optimized for use in controllers for large household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and air conditioners. Sample shipments are scheduled to begin in August, 2004 with volume production projected to start in October, 2004.
"Toshiba Corporation, a world leader in MCUs, is enhancing its MCU product offering by introducing a new 8-bit embedded Flash microcontroller targeted at the white goods segment," said Don Schneider, business development manager for the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "Toshiba continues to see demand in the low- end MCU market for MCUs with embedded non-volatile memory. In response to this need, the company has been developing devices optimized for its various served market segments."
The new 64-pin TMP86FS49 incorporates the high-performance, proprietary TLCS-870/C 8-bit CPU core in combination with 60 kilobytes (KB) of embedded flash memory, a 10-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and numerous serial interfaces.
Product Highlights
Highlights of the new MCU are as follows:
* With the combination of on-board Flash ROM and the Toshiba proprietary
8-bit CPU core, it is possible to program the microcontroller in-system
or in a bulk programmer.
* The Flash memory includes security functionality to prevent a customer
code from being read by a third party.
* The device is equipped with two channels of UART, two channels of fast
SIO, one channel of I2C bus and numerous serial interfaces for optimal
control of large household appliances
* Housed in a QFP, LQFP or SDIP package, the device can be embedded
easily into a variety of systems.
Pricing and Availability
The current sample price is $6.78 per piece in 1,000-piece quantities. Sample shipments are scheduled to begin in August, 2004 with volume production planned to start in October, 2004 at an initial production rate of 100,000 units per month.
